WWU's Eric Leonhardt to go "Beyond Petroleum"

Leonhardt, the director of WWU's Vehicle Research Institute and an associate professor of Engineering Technology, said the transportation sector in the United States is 97 percent dependent upon fossil fuels; and growing global demand, limited production capacity, emissions, global warming and oil supply chain security are a few of the continuing challenges facing the global use of oil for transportation. At the lecture, he will discuss three of the VRI's projects focused on alternative fuels and increased fuel efficiency

The impact of 9-11 and the emphasis on border security weakened momentum toward a post- NAFTA vision for an economically strengthened and more socially integrated North America. Dr. Blank will discuss how political change coming from the U.S. election can and should boost a badly needed continental vision to address economic development, climate change, migration and other pressing issues facing the three North American countries.

Not One Drop: Betrayal and Courage in the Wake of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill
Riki Ott, PhD marine biologist and independent environmental researcher and writer in Alaska.

Spanning nearly 40 years, Dr. Ott in her recent book, Not One Drop, describes an extraordinary tale of ordinary people who take on the world’s richest oil companies and most powerful politicians to protect Prince William Sound from oil accidents. Author Riki Ott, a rare combination of commercial salmon "fisherma'am" and PhD marine biologist, describes the firsthand impact of this broken promise when the Exxon Valdez oil spill decimated Cordova, Alaska.
