Japan: Nagoya University of Foreign Studies
The Nagoya University of Foreign Studies is located in Nisshin, a suburb of Nagoya. With a population of about 2.2 million, Nagoya plays a central role in industry, commerce, and transportation in the Chubu area. The city of Toyota, famous as the headquarters of the Toyota Automobile Corporation, is also in close proximity to the university. The campus is surrounded by greenery, which ensures an ideal study environment for students.
Academic Program Description
The Japanese Language Institute programs are offered during Fall Semester and Spring Semester. Students may enter the Japanese Language and Japanese Studies Program or the Contemporary Japan Program in Nagoya at the beginning of each semester. The students can attend either one semester or one academic year (two consecutive semesters). The maximum length of enrollment is for one academic year. The overall objective of the program lies in providing high-quality Japanese language and cultural instruction in order to train students who are highly motivated to pursue their academic goals.
Academic Year Schedule
The academic year consists of two fifteen week semesters.

Housing
Students will be housed in the NUFS International House, an on campus dormitory, established in 2001. Each room is equipped with a balcony, bathroom, air conditioner, closet, bed, curtains, desk & chair, shelves, telephone, etc.
Eligibility Requirements
- Minimum 2.5 GPA with completion of at least 30 credits at WWU by beginning of exchange
- At least six months of Japanese language experience
- Application approval by the IPE committee
Application Procedure
- Complete the Application Form for Japanese Language and Culture Program
- Submit the following with the Application Form for Japanese Language and Culture Program:
- Personal Reference Form
- Housing application (homestay application or student dormitory application)
- A 200-300 word- essay entitled "My Future Goal after Returning to my Home Country"
- Four recent passport-type photos
- Complete International Programs & Exchanges Study Abroad/Exchange Application and submit official academic transcripts
- Pay IPE office fee and WWU concurrent enrollment fee for first quarter abroad
- Application will be approved by the committee before the nomination is forwarded to the university
- Once accepted, Nagoya University of Foreign Studies will send a letter of acceptance and other documents necessary to obtain the student visa from the Japanese Consulate in Seattle

- Fall quarter/Academic Year: March 1st*
- Winter/Spring quarters: June 1st*
- Late applications considered on a case by case basis.
- * If the deadline occurs on a weekend, applications will be accepted on the following Monday.
