The State of Tasmania offers a unique combination of wilderness environment and sophisticated cultural opportunities. An island state, Tasmania is situated 200 miles south of Australia’s mainland and has a population of over 450,000. Tasmania has a temperate climate and one third of the state is reserved for national parks.
Academic Program Description
The University of Tasmania is a comprehensive university with over 16,000 students. The University of Tasmania has two campuses – one in Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, with 8500 students and a smaller one in the town of Launceston, with 5000 students. The university’s areas of study include Wilderness Studies, Aboriginal Studies, Environmental Science, Geography, Fine Arts & Music, Aquaculture, Marine Sciences, and Journalism.
Academic Year Schedule
The academic year at the University of Tasmania is divided into two 14-week semesters with a five-week break between each. An “enrollment and orientation week” for international students is held before the beginning of each semester.

Housing
Students have two options of University accommodation when studying at the Hobart campus: share houses or live in dormitory-like housing in the Residential College. Shared houses and apartments are available in both Hobart and Launceston. The Accommodation Officer will assist with arranging accommodation before arrival to Hobart or Launceston.
Eligibility Requirements
- Minimum 2.5 GPA with completion of at least 30 credits at WWU by beginning of exchange
- Application approval by the IPE committee
Application Procedure
- Complete University of Tasmania application form and submit along with official academic transcripts, list of courses currently in progress, list of subjects to be studied and scholarship essay, if applying for scholarship
- Complete International Programs & Exchanges Study Abroad/Exchange Application and submit with one letter from an academic reference and statement of purpose
- Application will be approved by the committee before the nomination is forwarded
- Once accepted, the University of Tasmania will send a letter of offer and housing application
- The student must accept the offer in writing. Once the acceptance is received, a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) form will be sent. This form is used to obtain the student visa from the Australian embassy or consulate.
