What is “Direct Exchange?”
Direct Exchange is a reciprocal exchange between Western Washington University and other universities abroad. A Direct Exchange is an affordable way for Western students to study abroad because of this reciprocity. A Direct Exchange can be a different experience than a typical “study abroad” program. Students who go on Direct Exchange tend to be quite independent, adaptable, and able to get around on their own.
Can I participate?
Yes, students can participate in a Direct Exchange if:
- They are a matriculated WWU student
- Have a minimum of 2.5 GPA (Depending on which international university the student is applying to the GPA requirement may be higher)
- They have completed at least 30 credits at WWU by the start of the exchange
How much does it cost?
Costs vary, depending on individual sites, but in general while studying abroad on Direct Exchange students will:
- Pay WWU tuition
- Pay housing, meals and other fees directly to the host institution abroad
Can I transfer credits back to Western?
Yes, students earn an S/U-graded block of International Studies credits. Grades earned on a Direct Exchange do not transfer back to Western and do not count toward your overall GPA.
What are my chances of placement?
Generally, two WWU students may be placed at each international site per year. An exception to this is the “University of Newcastle Study Abroad Option,” which allows for more WWU students to be accepted but tuition is paid directly to University of Newcastle. This option is usually more expensive.
How can I increase my chances of placement?
Because of the limited space available to place Western students, applying for a Direct Exchange may be competitive. Some helpful hints are:
- Research your Direct Exchange options thoroughly, and apply to one site by the deadline
- Make sure to follow the Application Checklist carefully so you will be sure to turn in all necessary application materials
- Be sure to meet with the Direct Exchange advisor before submitting the application
