Georg-August-Unveristat Gottingen

• Located in the northwestern part of Germany in the city of Gottingen. Approximately 50% of the population is under 35 years old, making it the quntessential university town.
• Has a student population of approximately 24,000, including over 2,600 international students
• Germany's highest ranked university and occupies 43rd place in the 2010/2011 worldwide ranking of universities

Academics

• The academic year is divided into winter and summer terms, with each term lasting six months.
  • Time after lectures end and before the examination period starts is to be used for independent studies.
  • Winter: Beginning of October – End of March
  • Summer: Beginning of April – End of Sept.

• This exchange is limited to the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Goettingen, which includes the following departments: Social Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, and Sport Science.

• The University of Goettingen may be willing to accept students to other departments on a case-by-case basis. Although some courses are taught in English, course options are limited. Applicants will need to pass a German Language proficiency exam.

• The University of Göttingen offers a German language crash course for exchange students.

Accommodations

• On-Campus and Off-Campus housing options are available.
  • For on-campus housing, students can get a relatively cheap room (between 180 and 240 Euro per month) at one of the various halls of residence. These are simple, furnished rooms; where students share the bathroom and the kitchen facilities.
