Richard Bruce, Director

As Director of International Student & Scholar Services Richard advises F-1 international students and J-1 Exchange Visitors, is the campus SEVIS Coordinator, works with international scholars and faculty on immigration and visa matters and is committed to supporting international students and scholars so they may succeed both academically and personally at Western.

Richard has 25 years of experience in international education, teaching English in Japan, teaching and advising students at an international school in Richmond, BC, Canada, and since 2002, working in international student and scholar services at Western Washington University.

Richard holds a BA in Liberal Arts from The Evergreen State College and an MEd in Student Affairs Administration from Western Washington University. For fun he enjoys cooking, trying new and different foods, gardening, and watching sports. Richard is originally from Seattle, WA.

Abigail Borchert, International Student Advisor

As International Student Advisor, Abigail works with international students on issues related to immigration, academics, and social/cultural adjustment.  She serves as an advisor to the Cross-Cultural Student Association, International Cooking Class, and International Buddy Program.  Abigail also works with the Center for International Studies and other offices around campus on events and activities including the Reel World Film Series, International Education Week, and International Women’s Day.

Abigail joined WWU in 2013 after returning to the US from England, where she worked in Alumni Relations at City University London. Previously, she served as Program Coordinator in the Office of International Students and Scholars at Yale University.  She has also spent time working and studying in Northern Ireland, Finland, and Spain.  Abigail holds a BA in International Studies from Middlebury College and an MA in Irish Studies from Queen’s University Belfast.  In her free time, she enjoys playing and watching rugby, skiing, reading, and going to the theater.  She also bakes some mean pumpkin chocolate chip cookies.  A Connecticut native, Abigail loves exploring the Pacific Northwest.
