Richard Bruce, Director

As Director of International Student & Scholar Services Richard advises F-1 international students and J-1 Exchange Visitors, is the campus SEVIS Coordinator, works with international scholars and faculty on immigration and visa matters and is committed to supporting international students and scholars so they may succeed both academically and personally at Western.

Richard has 25 years of experience in international education, teaching English in Japan, teaching and advising students at an international school in Richmond, BC, Canada, and since 2002, working in international student and scholar services at Western Washington University.

Richard holds a BA in Liberal Arts from The Evergreen State College and an MEd in Student Affairs Administration from Western Washington University. For fun he enjoys cooking, trying new and different foods, gardening, and watching sports. Richard is originally from Seattle, WA.

Valerie Kimble, International Student Advisor

Valerie was born and raised in Spain, and moved to the United States for college. She has lived and worked on the east and west coasts of the U.S., and in Papua New Guinea as a Peace Corps Volunteer. She has a B.S. in Marine Science from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and a Master’s in Teaching from Seattle University.

She advises F-1 and J-1 international students, and loves to learn about their cultures and languages. She has taught for over 20 years, and has advised international students for 8 years. She always seeks to know students and provide helpful advice and guidance on a variety of academic, immigration, personal, and cultural matters.

Her favorite activities are trail running, hiking, reading, and spending time with friends and family.
