Course Description

Students will undertake an analytical exploration of the visual aspects of storytelling in print and online media, with emphasis on photographic images, infographics, and publication and Web design. Prerequisites: Journalism 305 and Journalism 309.

 

Required Text

— The Newspaper Designer’s Handbook (sixth edition), Tim Harrower

— “Seeing Photographs,” in Photography, Barbara London and John Upton (on reserve in Wilson Library and electronically: http://lis.wwu.edu/screens/courseres.html)

— Assorted readings as assigned

 

Grading

Five assignments worth 40 points each, for a total of 200 points.

      Assignment #1: photo critique (due Oct. 9)

      Assignment #2: bracketing images (Oct. 16)

      Assignment #3: page design/slide show (Oct. 30)

      Assignment #4: infographic critique (Nov. 13)

      Assignment #5: Web sites/publication critique (Dec. 4)

 

There will be no final exam.
