Scholars Week Presentation

May 19, 2011

As part of Scholar's Week 2011, WWU student Daniel Espinoza-Gonzalez shares his spoken word poem to presentation spectators in conjunction with five other students who also participated in last quarter's LDST 497 Leadership and Pedagogy class taught by Joseph Garcia.

Joining Espinoza-Gonzalez in the presentation were Andrew Dyer, Maddie Neuman, Ben Neyman, Brennan Taylor and Christina Van Wingerden. Group members shared their experiences as facilitators and teachers of the winter 2011 LDST 197 class, as well as statistics and a video regarding the course's successes.

The Institute welcomed Gifty Baaba Asmah, founder and executive director of Daasgift Quality Foundation on April 14, 2010. Gifty presented at Fairhaven College's World Issues Forum.



Co-Sponsor for "Go for the Gold": Performance Perspectives of Olympic Athletes, hosted by the Canadian-American Studies Center.

Featured Speakers:

Erin Porter Bembry, US Olympian, Short track speed skater who competed in the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

Donovan Tildesley, Canadian swimmer and multiple medalist who, blind since birth, competed in the past three Summer Paralympics.

Through the personal stories of these remarkable athletes, WWU students and community members learned about the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements, the challenges of world record athleticism, and the importance of striving for excellence in life.
