THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE MINOR
The Russian Section offers a minor in Russian language, with three years of language instruction. No major is offered.
FIRST YEAR SEQUENCE
Russian 101, 102, 103 Elementary Russian (taught entirely in Russian; 4 credits each)
Russian 214 Russian Phonetics (a 2-credit course to be taken spring quarter concurrently with Russian 103)
SECOND YEAR SEQUENCE
Russian 201, 202, 203 Intermediate Russian (taught entirely in Russian; 4 credits each)
Russian 314 Russian Syntax (a 2-credit course to be taken spring quarter concurrently with Russian 203)
THIRD YEAR SEQUENCE
Russian 301, 302, 330 Advanced Russian (3 credits each)
The minor consists of 25 credits, which the student normally earns by taking Russian 214, 201, 202, 203, 314, 301, 302, and 330 in sequence.
Currently there is only one instructor in the program, Edward Vajda. Therefore the three-year sequence is started every other year. In 2002-2003, the first- and third-year sequences will be offered. In 2003-2004 the second-year sequence will be offered, and so forth.
OTHER COURSES OF INTEREST
The Russian section also offers two 5-credit classes in English that count toward General University Requirements (GUR) but not toward the Russian minor. These are Russian 110 (Introduction to Russian Civilization), and East Asian 210 (Introduction to Nomadic Civilizations). The latter course introduces the student to the native peoples of Siberia and Inner Asia.
