Who am I?

Hola! My name is Edna Fernández. I was born and raised in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. I am currently a sophomore at Eckerd College , majoring in Marine Science and minoring in Environmental Studies and Spanish Literature.
You can reach me at egfernan@eckerd.edu and check out my Curriculum Vitae here.
My time at MIMSUP
I had the incredible privilege of being one of eight students selected to participate in the National Science Foundation-funded Multicultural Initiative in Marine Sciences: Undergraduate Participation program at Shannon Point Marine Center. Here are some of the amazing things I got to do! (You really should apply! )
Research

I had the amazing opportunity of working with Suzanne Strom researching the effects of grazer pressures on Synechococcus morphology. I presented my research at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center, run by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminsitration (NOAA); and poster presentations at a PERS conference, and at alumni week in Western Washington University. In the following pages I describe my research more in depth.
Outreach

The MIMSUP students participated in marine science educational outreach(link) for grade school students. We taught second and fourth graders all about plankton, the food web, tides, beach environments and how all these things affect their live. We even got the chance to judge a science fair and work with the Mobile Ocean Science Information System (MOSIS) which allowed us to take local marine organisms to the public so they could learn about the awesome critters that live right off the coast.
