Salinity vs Upwelling and River Flow

Salinity compared to upwellingSalinity compared to river flow

We compared salinity to (a) upwelling and (b) Fraser River flow. Salinity was not significantly related to river flow. Only a few data points showed a clear salinity decreases as river flow increased. Salinity also showed no consistent variation with upwelling. Stronger upwelling periods showed roughly the same salinity values as weaker upwelling events.

Nutrient Concentration and Upwelling

Nutrient concentration compared to upwelling

Nutrient concentration (nitrate being the nutrient) was compared to upwelling. There was a notable decrease in nutrient concentration as upwelling strength increased. This was contrary to our predictions. To understand this further we created a yearly representation of upwelling and river flow.
