Multicultural Initiative in the Marine Sciences (MIMSUP)
The National Science Foundation-funded MIMSUP program was designed to increase diversity within the next generation of marine scientists. Participants received intensive training in the marine sciences and in professional opportunities available to those who choose this career path. Applications were encouraged, in particular, from U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents belonging to groups currently underrepresented in the marine sciences (i.e., Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, African Americans, Latino/Hispanics and Pacific Islanders). Applicants had to be currently enrolled in a 4-year college or university.
Eight selected students spent two quarters at the Shannon Point Marine Center taking introductory and specialized courses in the marine sciences (31 quarter credit hours), attending seminars and workshops, exploring career opportunities, and engaging in supervised research. They also attended a regional or national scientific meeting. After the program, students returned to their home institutions to complete their undergraduate programs.
The MIMSUP program has ended. Please consider applying instead for our summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program, which has a similarly strong emphasis on diversity.
