Multicultural Initiative in the Marine Sciences (MIMSUP)
The National Science Foundation-funded MIMSUP program is designed to increase diversity within the next generation of marine scientists. Participants receive intensive training in the marine sciences and in professional opportunities available to those who choose this career path. Applications are encouraged, in particular, from U.S. citizens belonging to groups currently underrepresented in the marine sciences (i.e., Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, African Americans, Latino/Hispanics and Pacific Islanders). Applicants should be currently enrolled in a 4-year college or university.
Eight selected students spend two quarters (January 8 - June 14 with a spring break from March 23 - April 1) at the Shannon Point Marine Center taking introductory and specialized courses in the marine sciences (31 quarter credit hours), attending seminars and workshops, exploring career opportunities, and engaging in supervised research. They also attend a regional or national scientific meeting. After the program, students return to their home institutions to complete their undergraduate programs.
