MIMSUP has significantly enhanced the ability of student participants to succeed academically and to focus on and achieve career goals. The students who have participated in the program since 1991 represent a highly diverse group: 51% are Hispanic; 24% are African-American; 14% are Pacific Islander; 11% are Native American or Alaskan Natives. Fifty-seven percent of MIMSUP alumni, after completing their baccalaureate degrees, have gone on to graduate and professional degree programs and the majority of program alumni are working in marine or related environmental professions. MIMSUP was recognized as a national model for mentoring, receiving a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Math, and Engineering Mentoring. Descriptions of the program and its outcomes are published in the Journal of Geoscience Education and in Winds of Change magazine.
