Marine Habitat Diversity

BIOL 110

We kick off the Marine Science Scholars program with a two-week intensive field course at Shannon Point Marine Center just prior to Fall Quarter. We explore a diversity of marine habitats characteristic of the Salish Sea, including seagrass, soft-sediment, rocky intertidal, pelagic, and subtidal. We use field trips, laboratory exercises, group projects, and lectures to investigate the biological and physical properties of these marine environments. This course is available only to incoming freshmen enrolled in the Marine Science Scholars Program and is co-taught by Drs. Shawn Arellano and Sylvia Yang. Biology 110 continues into Fall quarter with regular meetings on Western's main campus in Bellingham.
