Composer and theorist Edward Rutschman came to Western in 1977. He holds a BMus in Piano Performance from the University of Northern Colorado, a MMus in Composition from Arizona State University and a Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Washington. At Western Dr. Rutschman performs the duties of Graduate Program Adviser and Coordinator of Music Theory in addition to teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in music theory and history. Dr. Rutschman's works have been performed in North America, Europe and Asia Minor and include commissions by the Washington Brass Ensemble, the Kent State University Wind Ensemble, and the Fairbanks (Alaska) Symphony Association. His musicological articles have been published by publishing houses in the United States and Italy. He received the Bellingham Arts Commission Mayor's Award for contributions to the arts in 1987 and the WWU Excellence in Teaching Award in May of 1993.
