Summer Seminar for School Teachers
Welcome to “Four Classics: First Novels of Native America,” a five week seminar for school teachers that will explore the worlds of contemporary literature by American Indian authors, using four prominent novels as a window into this canon and its development. Looking at the initial novels of these prominent writers—D’Arcy McNickle, N. Scott Momaday, James Welch and Leslie Marmon Silko—allows us to discuss their contributions in the context of an “emergent” written literature, a literary phenomenon of distinct character since the 1970s. The seminar’s sixteen summer scholars will explore these authors’ other works and secondary sources that will allow for an open and dynamic discussion that will also cover contemporary film.
