Pacific Northwest Chapters Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience

The Pacific Northwest Neuroscience Meeting is an international joint meeting of regional SFN chapters, including the Canadian British Columbia and US Pacific Cascades chapters. The event will be held on Saturday, October 3rd 2009 (9:00 am- 6:30 pm) in the Academic Instructional Center at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, USA.

The meeting highlights research presentations by trainees (undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) and keynote invited speakers from the US and Canada.

New features of this year's event include:

1) A mentor-mentee program. The mentoring program provides an opportunity for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to guide undergraduate students through the scientific meeting, facilitating a dialogue between current postdoctoral fellows and graduate students and the next generation of graduate students. Also included in this program is the option for postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and undergraduate students to be assigned a mentor from either health care or industry. Mentor-mentee pairs will be assigned prior to the day of the meeting based on their research interests and career objectives. The goal is to establish connections that will enrich the career of both the mentors and the mentees.

2) A "life outside of academia" program. This program will include presentations by industry and healthcare representatives, including a keynote address by Elaine Jones, COO of the Allen Institute for Brain Science.

This event is sponsored by the UBC Brain Research Centre and Western Washington University.
