Kate McLean
Psychology
Kate is a California native, who is very happy to be returning to the west coast. She completed her graduate work at UC Santa Cruz, and spent three years as an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. Her research centers on narrative approaches to identity development, particularly in adolescence. When not teaching in the lab you will find Kate close to the water, exploring the trails of the Pacific Northwest, or practicing her mandolin.

Scott Miles
Env Studies
Scott has spent his career learning about & working on disaster risk reduction, sustainable development, social vulnerability, science-intensive decision support, and collaborative planning. For 6 years, he was a member of the U.S. Geological Survey Western Region Earthquake Hazards Team and developed hazards information tools for public decision-making using GIS. He received a Ph.D. in geography from University of WA and a post-graduate diploma from the University of Edinburgh in GIS, with a focus on environmental modeling.

Liz Mogford
Sociology
Liz is a native New Mexican who relocated to the Pacific NW in 1990. She will teach courses in Global Health and World Population. She is interested in exploring the root economic and social causes of health inequalities. She has lived and worked in Cameroon and India and her favorite pastime is backpacking.

Ronald Oertel
Economics
Dr. Oertel just finished his Ph.D. in economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Having previously taught here, he is excited to be begin teaching at Western this fall (Go Vikings!). He uses computationally-intensive methods to analyze the decisions to enter, leave, and re-enter schooling, and the roles that labor market conditions and tuition play in these decisions.

Diversity Fellow. Stacy enjoys diversity, likes to ride snowgos, cut meat/fish, eat, laugh and exaggerate. Currently she has no plans for the future but remains excited about the past.

Alicia Maria Rivera
English
Her research and teaching focus on contemporary Chicana/o and African-American literature and culture. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Lysa describes her life after high-school as an “unintentional series of Northern migrations.” Happily settled in Bellingham with her husband and 14-month-old son, she secretly enjoys blogging, bad television, and the occasional science-fiction novel.

Amites Sarkar
Mathematics
Amites was born, raised and educated in England, and received a PhD from Cambridge University. He then spent five years at Philips Research Laboratories and four years as a postdoc at the University of Memphis. He enjoys reading, running and hiking, and intends to learn to ski.
