Derrick Mears Ph.D., A.T.C. is an Associate Professor of Teacher Education and teaches secondary physical education methods and adapted physical education in the PK-12 Physical Education and Health Teacher Education Program. Before coming to Western he was an Assistant Professor of Teacher Education at Missouri State University, a Lecturer at the University of Arkansas and spent 12 years in public schools in Missouri as a Physical Education, Science and Gifted Education teacher as well as new teacher mentor, Essential Elements of Instruction Trainer and Chair of the district wide Staff Development Committee for the North Kansas City School District.
He currently serves on the Professional Preparation and Research Steering Committee for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), Editor for the Technology Tips Section of the Journal for Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and is involved with multiple projects including authoring policy documents, development of assessment texts and other projects with AAHPERD. In addition he serves as the Higher Education representative for the Washington Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Board of Directors and works extensively with the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction on State wide K-12 initiatives as part of the Health and Fitness Cadre and Teaching Standards Revision Committees.
