Faculty Awards & Recognition

Although all WWU faculty members are committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, leadership and community service, periodically the university community has an opportunity to recognize some of our most exceptional faculty members.  The following awards are examples of the WWU community’s efforts to recognize and show appreciation to faculty members and others for their service and outstanding achievements.

Nominations for exceptional faculty members may be made for the excellence in teaching, scholarship and leadership awards.  Nominations of faculty, staff and students may be made for the Carl H. Simpson Bridging Award.

Faculty Excellence in Teaching Awards

Two Excellence in Teaching awards have been made possible by the Western Washington University Foundation.  Each award includes a $1,000 check*.  A faculty member from either the College of Humanities and Social Sciences or the College of Sciences and Technology will be chosen to receive the Peter J. Elich Excellence in Teaching Award, and a faculty member from one of the other Colleges:  Business and Economics, Fairhaven, Fine and Performing Arts, Huxley, and Woodring College of Education will be chosen to receive the Excellence in Teaching Award.  The award recipients will be recognized at a reception hosted by the Provost and Faculty Senate during spring quarter.  (*Note: For each net $1,000 check, the University also contributes approximately $440 for tax related deductibles plus $110 for benefits for a total cost of approximately $1,550.)

Students, alumni, faculty and staff members are encouraged to nominate faculty members for the Excellence in Teaching Awards by December 6, 2013. The nomination forms are closed.

Olscamp Research & Outstanding Scholarship Awards

Two research/scholarship award checks of $1,000* each will be presented to WWU faculty members at the reception hosted by the Provost and Faculty Senate during spring quarter.  A faculty member from either the College of Humanities and Social Sciences or the College of Sciences and Technology will be chosen to receive the Paul J. Only WWU faculty members, department chairs and deans may nominate a faculty colleague for the Research/Scholarship Awards.  Nominations should be made by December 6, 2013. The nomination forms are closed.

Outstanding Faculty Leadership Award

The Outstanding Faculty Leadership Award includes a *$1,000 check. The award is intended to recognize a WWU faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding leadership either on campus and/or in the broader community. Leadership contributions may be internal (i.e., chairing or serving on university committees; leading departmental programs; creating new or innovative initiatives for the department or college) or external (i.e., active membership or leadership in professional associations, serving on a community board of directors; or teaching or leadership in community programs).  The recipient of this award will be recognized at the President’s Fall 2013 Opening Convocation event.  (*Note: For each net $1,000 check, the University also contributes approximately $440 for tax related deductibles plus $110 for benefits for a total cost of approximately $1,550.)

Past Outstanding Faculty Leadership award recipients

Carl H. Simpson Bridging Award

This award of $1,000* from an endowment made by the Simpson family is made annually to a student, staff or faculty member who has created bridges and forged new paths that others may follow and build upon in turn.  During his twenty-five years working at Western as a professor and administrator, Carl H. Simpson was a man dedicated to bridging intellectual, interpersonal and administrative worlds.  With kindness, enthusiasm and creativity, he sought to unite divisions within academia, faculty, staff, students and administrative campus life.  Carl helped people come together and facilitated creative process in a variety of settings.  He acknowledged people’s strengths and encouraged them to trust themselves, helping people find and give their best.


The Carl H. Simpson Bridging Award is intended to benefit a WWU student, staff or faculty member who has demonstrated a remarkable ability or innovative approach to bridging some aspect of academic or campus life, in this way bettering the Western community.  Some examples:  developing a new style of teaching to improve the quality of education; developing interdisciplinary study or intercampus diplomacy; creating supportive service; or mentoring others.  The recipient of this award will be recognized at the President’s Fall 2013 Opening Convocation event.   (*Note: For each net $1,000 award check, additional contributions are made, including $440 for tax related deductibles plus $110 for benefits for a total cost of approximately $1,550.)
