Commencement Photography Etiquette

To continue to ensure that all Western Washington University graduates receive the deserved recognition as their Dean reads their name, we ask that the use of selfie photography be refrained during the walk across. Taking selfies during this brief moment on stage can cause an interruption to our ceremony making the ceremony pause and disrupting the proper recognition of all graduates. Each graduate receiving a diploma deserves the time to have their name read without attention being drawn to another graduate. Therefore, we are asking students to respect this request and leave their phones and cameras at their seat during the walk across. Graduates return to the same seat after receiving their diploma cover.

Any phones and cameras attached to selfie sticks previous to the walk across will be temporarily removed from the student and returned after this portion of the ceremony is complete.

Graduates are welcome to take photos before, during, and after the ceremony. There are professional photographers at commencement taking a photograph of the moment each student receives his/her diploma.
