Center for Canadian-American Studies
The Center for Canadian-American Studies emphasizes student research as an integral part of the major and in topic-specific courses focussing on cross-border relations. Majors are required to complete the two-course sequence Research Problem Identification and Research Analysis and Writing. These two courses involve designing and writing an original research project. To encourage depth in the projects, the courses run over two quarters, with the first quarter devoted to problem identification and research design, and the second quarter focussed on writing the research paper. The Center also sponsors student research in collaboration with colleagues and students in Canada. A recent course focused on managing the transboundary environment. Students attended lectures at the University of British Columbia and wrote original policy-related papers utilizing library resources and faculty from both sides of the border.
