Undergraduate research is encouraged and supported in many ways in the Department of Economics. Advanced courses typically require significant research papers, independent study courses are designed for students who wish to pursue an in-depth research question, and several faculty members have included students in their own research. Papers written by our students have been submitted to scholarly journals and presented at conferences. The quality of these papers has been high, as is evidenced by the fact that a student from the WWU Economics Department won the Undergraduate Student Paper award at both the 2000 and 2001 Pacific Northwest Regional Economic Conferences. In addition, the Economics Student Association organizes an informal bi-weekly economics discussion group and participated in a regional student conference held in Fall 2002. For Scholars Week 2003, the Economics Department will honor its students by participating in the Sigma Xi poster session and the Scholars Week Banquet.
