What is the Center for Service Learning?
The Center for Service-Learning (CSL) supports the purposeful integration of service and learning through academically rigorous courses and co-curricular activities.
The Center for Service-Learning is instrumental in helping the university carry out its mission to cultivate a learning community that, along with community partners, involves its members in active learning, scholarly discourse, and reflection. We provide resources and support for collaboration among students, faculty, and local, regional and international community partner organizations.
What new opportunities are available for volunteers this year?
CSL will house and manage the AmeriCorps Students in Service Program, a program that offers students a financial incentive toward their education for volunteer service. We will work closely with Whatcom Volunteer Center to provide an on-campus resource for community volunteer opportunities. WVC will share office space with CSL on Thursday afternoons and we encourage students to drop by to learn more about volunteering.
How many students are involved in service-learning?
In 2009/10, CSL identified 97 WWU courses offering a service-learning component serving over 2500 students. The students completed over 60,000 hours of service in the community.
What makes service-learning different from volunteering?
Service-learning combines academic instruction with community-based learning through service projects that meet community needs. In other words, students get credit for making a contribution to their community while applying classroom theory in a setting outside of the classroom.
