New Program: Focus in Marine Science Undergraduate Program (FIMSUP)
Prepare yourself for a career in marine science in a rigorous course of study that includes a strong base in the liberal arts, the broad training in life sciences that characterizes a major in Biology or Environmental Science, and the special opportunities for study of the marine environment and its living resources provided by Western’s extraordinary facilities and programs at its Shannon Point Marine Center (SPMC). This is a course of study that will provide you with the strongest base possible for the marine science profession.
FIMSUP invites scholars to participate in a special program of study in the freshman and sophomore years leading to the marine specialization within the Biology or Environmental Science majors. Applicants to Western selected as Marine Science Scholars will take a two-week 5-credit field and laboratory-intensive course at the Shannon Point Marine Center in September, prior to the start of Fall Quarter. During the Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters of the freshman and sophomore years, Marine Science Scholars will work with Western’s marine scientists on special problem 1-cr seminars on topical issues such as red tides, ocean acidification, and food web dynamics.

MIMSUP 2012 Program
The National Science Foundation-funded MIMSUP program is designed to increase diversity within the next generation of marine scientists. Participants receive intensive training in the marine sciences and in professional opportunities available to those who choose this career path. Applications are encouraged, in particular, from U.S. citizens belonging to groups currently underrepresented in the marine sciences (i.e., Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, African Americans, Latino/Hispanics and Pacific Islanders).
Program Dates: January 4, 2012 - June 8, 2012
REU 2012 Program
The National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program provides support for undergraduate students to conduct independent, supervised research with a faculty advisor.
Students participating in the program will receive a $4350 stipend, housing (see Residential Facilities) at the Shannon Point Marine Center, and a travel allowance.

Mobile Ocean Science Information System (MOSIS)
The Shannon Point Marine Center (SPMC) Mobile Ocean Science Information System (MOSIS) supports our initiative to educate the public on issues relating to the marine sciences, with special emphasis on local waters and the living resources that inhabit them. Our goals are to translate the research being conducted at SPMC in a way that informs public audiences and raises the level of ocean literacy among the general population. We do this by providing lessons to local and regional school-age children and audiences attending public events.
MOSIS permits us to bring interesting marine creatures directly to these audiences and to provide information about them and about how and why we are studying them at SPMC.
MOSIS has been provided by gifts to the WWU Foundation totaling $9500 from the Borman Family Foundation for this purpose.

Marine Science and the Arts
NOTE: Application deadline: May 14, 2012.
The Shannon Point Marine Center (SPMC) and the College of Fine & Performing Arts are jointly sponsoring a Marine Science and the Arts summer internship for WWU undergraduates who are majoring in some aspect of the arts. The internship is part of the marine center’s well-established summer program for undergraduates. The student selected to receive the internship will join 11 other students from WWU and from around the nation who will be spending nine weeks in residence at the marine center located in Anacortes, WA. While SPMC has operated undergraduate research programs in the marine sciences for more than 20 years, bringing the arts to the program is a new feature. It is anticipated that the student intern, in association with a faculty adviser, will be stimulated by the activities at SPMC and the marine environment to apply his/her artistic talents to whatever medium is appropriate. At the conclusion of the summer program, the intern will provide a showing of the results of the project coincident with the presentations made by the other summer interns.
