Sustainable Ithaca:
Applied Studies in Sustainable Community Development

August 28–September 12, 2010 - Field Research in Greece September 20-30, 2010 - Synthesis and Production Phase - WWU
Explore Sustainable Mediterranean architecture, town vernacular, and culture, while performing fieldwork on the small coastal Kioni Village in Ithaca, Greece. Students in this hands-on international program will conduct research, analysis and production of plans for sustainable community development.
- Experience applied research in an international coastal community
- Study Mediterranean vernacular architecture
- Learn about cultural competency by living and working in a Greek Island village
- Develop skills in restorative community architecture and sustainable design
- Research sustainable economic development
- Analyze cultural sustainability, symbolism, and migration impact
- Evaluate village sites in the neighboring Ionian Islands
This three-week international studies program consists of two weeks of intensive field work in Greece, accompanied by a week on campus devoted to synthesis, analysis, and production of final planning documents.
