How is this Calculated?
From your input of starting term and ending term, the green fee calculator computes an estimated carbon offset based on stored values. Using the known yearly carbon offset and student population (FTE) for each year, the calculator divides the year's offset by the number of students to obtain your personal yearly offset. Because the majority of students are on campus for fall, winter and spring quarters, summer quarter is neglected. The personal yearly offset is then divided by three (F,W,S quarters), yielding a personal quarterly offset.
The carbon calculator loops through the stored data from your indicated starting term to the entered ending term summing up the total offset and total cost as it goes along. On the results screen the total offset is the sum of all personal quarterly carbon offsets and the bang for your buck is the total offset divided by the total amount you have paid into the green fee in the indicated time frame.
