6 Things You Can Do to Decrease Electricity Use
- Use stairs, not elevators
- Use lights only when necessary
- Air dry your clothes instead of using a dryer
- Keep your monitor and computer off when you are not using them
- Make sure your personal light bulbs are the energy efficient compact fluorescents (CFLs)
- Avoid the Phantom Load
What is a Phantom Load? It's the amount of electricity that's being drained by equipment that's plugged in-even when it's off. Any device that has a remote control or instant on capability (TVs, VCRs) is part of your phantom load. Any device that has a digital time display (microwave) or plugs into the wall with a power adapter aka "wall cube" (iPod, Cell Phone, answering machine, hair dryer) is drawing power continuously.
