As part of Zero Waste Western, we're proud to announce that we are participating in RecycleMania 2012. RecycleMania is a national competition and campaign aimed at reducing waste, while increasing awareness and educating students, faculty, staff and administration about our composting and recycling programs. We will be implementing RecycleMania campus wide, in a collective effort to increase composting and recycling in residential and retail dining operations, residence halls and academic and office buildings.

Over an 8-week period each spring, colleges across the United States and Canada report the amount of recyclables, compostables and landfill waste collected each week. They are then ranked in various categories based on who recycles the most on a per capita basis, as well as which schools have the best recycling rate as a percentage of total waste and which schools generate the least amount of combined trash and recycling.

Throughout the competition, we will be able to track our progress and see how we compare to other competing schools. Results will be posted on the RecyleMania Scoreboard weekly. Schools will be assessed in the following categories: the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, and the school with the highest recycling rate.

In an effort to conserve natural resources and reduce waste, remember "The Three R's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle"!
