External Internships / Employment

The Northwest Straits (NWS) Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation (in Bellingham, WA) is working with several other local organizations under the umbrella of the Whatcom Watershed Information Network (WWIN) to host Water Week in Whatcom County. Water Week 2012 will be hosted September 8th – 22nd throughout Whatcom County with the collaboration of local organizations putting on their own events relating to water. This internship will include attending WWIN subcommittee planning meetings to organize this large event. Intern will be helping to plan out media, outreach, and event planning and advertising as part of a subcommittee. San Juan County (in Friday Harbor, WA) is currently seeking a GIS Analyst to perform complex GIS tasks including data development, spatial analysis, custom map generation, GPS data collection and post processing and report preparation. Requires a bachelor's degree in a related field and two years professional GIS and computerized database experience. Coal Train Facts is looking for an intern or two to help with research projects, abstracting relevant articles, and writing for our website. Depending upon intern's skill set, the internship might be expanded to include other information outreach tasks (i.e. social media) and organizational support work. Hours are flexible, though we will be looking for a consistent commitment. The position is unpaid; the work is interesting, meaningful, and could result in a network of community connections. The intern(s) would be working with editor/founder Julie Trimingham and with Nate Melanson, who is responsible for day-to-day operations, correspondence, website maintenance, social media, research and writing. This would be an excellent opportunity for someone interested in sustainability,writing/journalism, non-profit organizations, community engagement, and the like. Sustainable Bellingham is a 501(c)3 organization with a history of over six years in Bellingham. They have a loose organizational hierarchy and put every effort into maximizing our participation in action-oriented events in the community. They are 100% volunteer. Projects center around community-building and low-impact lifestyles, and include re-localization, urban gardening, permaculture, alternative transportation, social justice, etc. Projects are usually comprised of 2-3 leads who organize the events.

Oregon Institute of Technology: The OIT Sustainability Internship Program has two objectives: 1. To provide professional development and training opportunities in Sustainability for OIT students and 2. To provide student involvement and support for sustainability efforts at OIT. Students applying for internship positions must be responsible, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and have a strong commitment to sustainability. Second and third-year interns will have priority consideration for positions.
