Welcome from the Department Chair
The 2011-2012 season is upon us, and the Department of Theatre and Dance has an innovative, exciting and quality selection of productions for you to experience. As unique and varied as our students, faculty and staff, this season promises to have something for every audience member as well as solid pedagogical experiences for our students. From two mainstage dance concerts to contemporary plays, a French Renaissance comedy and the blockbuster musical Rent, the Department of Theatre and Dance is pulling out all the stops to showcase our talented students and faculty.
We continue to put the experiential, laboratory and practical pedagogy of the students first and foremost, with course embedded Service Learning and outreach projects leading the way in community connections. Our students and graduates continue to garner top-notch professional internships in their field and win national awards for everything from acting to dramaturgy to design. Each level of coursework in the major is vitally connected to our productions, community outreach, and/or mentoring youth in Whatcom County –and we are delighted to
share with you our latest season that celebrates the incredible and comprehensive training offered here at Western.
So please join us as we share the live performance experience with you!

Mission of the Theatre Arts Department
The faculty and staff of the Western Washington University Theatre and Dance Department are committed to a liberal arts approach to theatre education while maintaining a balance of both academic and practical approaches to the art of theatre. We deeply believe in the value of academic rigor which in turn supports and maintains productions of the highest standards. We promote a global, diverse and collaborative view of theatre education, and strive to train artistic leaders in their chosen theatrical disciplines who will further contribute to the craft.
