Scholarships
The Department of Theatre and Dance offers departmental scholarships to its majors each spring for the following academic year. Please see below for our 13-14 scholarship opportunities.
Scholarships are also available on a College level through the College of Fine and Performing Arts Dean's Office. Please visit the CFPA Website for more details.
Departmental Scholarships: 13-14 Theatre Arts
Berta Altose Thal Endowment
This scholarship was established by Sidney R. Thal in memory of his wife, Berta. The scholarship is awarded to students majoring in theatre arts who demonstrate exceptional merit and financial need.
Scholarship amount: $1,000
Sene and Louella Carlile Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Sene and Loella Carlile and is awarded annually to an outstanding upper-division student majoring in theatre arts.
Scholarship amount: $500
Theatre Arts Scholarship Endowment
This scholarship, which varies in amount from year to year, is available to theatre arts majors who possess a strong grade point average (minimum 3.0 overall GPA) and have demonstrated excellence in departmental production contributions.
Scholarship amount: $1,000
Margaret Green Siegley Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to an incoming/new Theatre Arts student either as a transfer, running start or freshman status. Preference will be given, but is not limited to, students wishing to pursue theatrical design and/or management.
1-2 scholarships at a minimum of $500 each with a total of $2,250 to award
Additional tuition waivers may also be available for the 2013-14 academic year, all completed scholarship application packets will be considered.
To apply for a Theatre Arts departmental scholarship, please submit the following:
1. Resume of theatre experience (what tech work, roles, responsibilities, when, where under whose direction, etc.) and portfolio as applicable.
2. One page statement addressing:
- Your academic goals and academic history within the department
- Your post-graduate aspirations
- Your merit for a specified scholarships (i.e. financial need, academic history, contribution to the department)
3. Copy of Academic History (must include current grade point average)

Departmental Scholarships: 13-14 Dance
Monica Gutchow Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Monica Gutchow, a former WWU Dance faculty member. Two to three scholarships will be awarded to upper-division students in Dance who have demonstrated exceptional merit, good academic standing, financial need and an interest in teaching dance at the college level.
Scholarship amount: up to $7,000 to award, in increments of at least $1,000. (Amount varies depending on number of qualified applicants and endowment balance).
Summer Scholarships
These scholarships are intended to assist Dance majors with summer tuition costs. Applicants must be registered for at least 5 credits in summer 2013, demonstrate exceptional merit, good academic standing and financial need.
Scholarship amount: 5 scholarships of $400 apiece, $2000 to award.
To apply for a Dance departmental scholarship, please submit the following:
1. Resume of WWU dance experience
2. One page statement addressing:
- Your academic goals and academic history within the department
- Your post-graduate aspirations
- Your merit for a specified scholarships (i.e. financial need, academic history, contribution to the department)
3. Copy of Academic History (must include current grade point average)
Drop your completed scholarship packet off in the Theatre and Dance Office (PAC 395).
