WWU Employee Transportation
WWU Sustainability & Transportation Options
WWU supports the use of alternatives to driving alone to work by providing information, assistance, and incentives through the Sustainable Transportation Office. The amenities available on Western’s Campus can also make it easier for employees to drive less.
Impacts and Costs of Transportation
In Washington State, transportation is one of the greatest energy users and generators of greenhouse gases. Vehicle emissions impact our bays, lakes and streams. Financially, almost 20% of the average household income in the Northwest is spent on transportation—more than food. This is true even where there is no user charge for parking. Car ownership, fuel, maintenance and insurance all add up to a significant cost, without counting the cost of personal health impacts, environmental cleanup and other side effects of automobile dependency.
Benefits of Driving Less
Driving less is a significant way to save money, reduce stress, and add healthy physical activity into your day. 40% of WWU employees walk, bike, carpool, or ride the bus to get to work, some every day, others one or more days a week.
Employee Parking
Parking is available for all WWU employees. WWU parking facilities and administration are self-supporting, with permits required for all users. Parking costs are kept as low as possible by encouraging alternatives, rather than incurring the expense of expanded parking facilities. The price list for employee parking permits is available through Parking Services.
Public parking at no charge is located in the Lincoln Creek Transportation Center, with transportation to WWU and downtown Bellingham via WTA bus. WTA bus passes are subsidized for WWU employees.
