Commuter Stories
Angela Vandenhaak and Brian Heinrich
Many new parents find it hard to squeeze exercise into their busy lives. Western employees Angela Vandenhaak (Western Foundation) and Brian Heinrich (Washington Campus Compact) have made fitness a family affair by incorporating active transportation into their commutes and daycare arrangements for their 1 year old daughter, Marina.
"Brian bikes Marina to Blossom Daycare and then over to 32nd Street where he works each morning. I walk the empty jogging stroller to work, and at the end of the day, I don my running clothes and head to Blossom to pick her up, pushing an empty stroller (I get some funny looks as I run across campus with the empty jogger)," says Angela. "Marina loves her commute—and Brian and I get some exercise and fresh air. We are committed to sustainable transportation and are blessed to be living close to WWU, downtown and daycare. "
