Commuter Stories
Carrie Glimm
Dr. Carrie Glimm looks forward to her daily commute. This might be surprising, because rain or shine, Carrie walks to work. Every day. She looks forward to the mile-and-a-half trip because that’s when she listens to audiobooks.
Carrie also appreciates the money she saves by not driving a car to work. In fact, she and her husband recently sold their second car – with neither of them driving to work, it wasn’t needed. The savings add up: no parking permit to buy, less frequent fill-ups, reduced insurance and maintenance costs.
The main motivation for choosing to walk to work every day is that commuting by foot helps fit exercise into her day. “I save time by not going to the gym”, explained Glimm.
Even though she will soon move farther from campus, Dr. Glimm plans to continue walking. “The distance to the bus station is about the same as my current walk, so I plan to walk to the bus station from my new house and take the bus the rest of the way.”
By logging her walks to work at www.whatcomsmarttrips.org, Carrie is eligible for discounts, cash prizes and other rewards. She received $25 in Munch Money in Sustainable Transportation’s May smart commuter drawing.
