Commuter Stories

Christine Youtsey and Anna Chamberlin

Self proclaimed Goat Girl (Christine Youtsey) and Chicken Pal (Anna Chamberlin) commute together from Bow to the Communication Sciences and Disorders department in the new Academic Instruction Center East.

"Carpooling is great!" says Youtsey. "We listen to Stephanie Miller on the radio, sing songs and celebrate three day week-ends with Gelato Friday."

Christine lives off Cook Road, so the bus is another viable means of getting to work. Youtsey rides route 80X "County Connector" using her discounted WWU faculty/staff bus pass.

When they need to drive alone to work they use "commuter passes". These one day scratch-off parking permits (available in packs of 10 from Parking Services) allow carpoolers, bus riders, walkers and cyclists to park on campus if they need to drive alone to work occasionally.

Christine and Anna log their rideshare and bus trips online at www.whatcomsmartrips.org. By logging their "smart" trips they are eligible for discounts, cash prizes and other rewards. Christine won the $25 Munch Money prize in September's Sustainable Transportation smart commuter drawing.

"We like that we can reduce our carbon footprint and get rewarded for it" Youtsey explained. "Thank you Sustainable Transportation!"
