Cold Beverage Task Force

Members of Western Washington University’s campus community are invited to submit proposals for the funding of speakers from the Cold Beverage Contract’s (CBC) Enhancement Fund. Speaker themes should tie with the University’s mission to nurture the intellectual, ethical, social, physical, and emotional development of each student; to teach learning skills useful in a rapidly changing and highly technical world; and to develop a consciousness of the challenges and responsibilities of living in a diverse and pluralistic society. 

Interdisciplinary themes are particularly appropriate, as are speakers who offer perspectives of interest to a broad range of faculty and staff.  Speakers may be from a broad range of disciplines, who treat a variety of topics from the sciences to the arts to current events, and who are located from an array of positions on the political spectrum. The goal is to provide stimulation on topics of current local, national and/or global interest in order to raise the level of intellectual discourse and to promote an atmosphere of respectful, yet engaged, intellectual debate.

Proposals that tie to current university discussions, themes and programs and that assimilate the theme of the speaker or the speakers themselves into other activities and/or academic coursework on campus are preferred. Collaboration with other departments and organizations and/or co-sponsorship is encouraged if there are other partial funding sources available.

Proposals should address mechanisms that will be utilized to promote and provide visibility to the event(s). Events may be open to the general Bellingham community, but should primarily serve to enhance the intellectual environment of the WWU campus community.

Proposal Process:

Funding is available through the University’s Cold Beverage Contract created through a competitive bid process that selected a distributor of cold beverages for the campus. The Cold Beverage Contract (CBC) Student Committee, consisting of faculty, students and administrators, makes its recommendations to the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services who is the final decision-making authority for this fund. A “Lecture Subcommittee” of the CBC Student Committee reviews proposals throughout the year as requests are submitted. Given this process, please submit proposals well in advance (allow at least 4 weeks) of your timeline to hear a decision; proposals may be made for lectures that would take place in the current or future academic years.

Proposals should be submitted using the Cold Beverage Contract Enhancement Fund – Funding Proposal Form available as an online E-Sign form.  Check the box labeled “Lecture or Other Project” on the form. A one to two-page full description of the proposal should address how it meets the criteria and goals of the CBC Lecture Program as stated above. 

Include a 1-2 page bio of the speaker, the proposed schedule and, if applicable, how the proposed speaker or program ties in with any course work (and whether that restricts the dates of the appearance.)  Include a budget (including a brief explanation of other sources of funding or sponsors if available) and whether there is opportunity to share costs with another institution or organization who would like the speaker to appear in Northwest at the same time. The full budget should include all applicable costs of the event, including but not limited to: speaker fees, travel & per diem, room rental and set-up, advertising/publicity, staffing, ticketing, reception, parking, etc. Please name the WWU faculty and/or staff who will be responsible for the various arrangements.
