Western Way Wall of Acknowledgment - Winter 2014

Western Grounds Crew

Western Grounds Crew, Facilities Management

photo

Recognized for being:
Inviting, Distinctive and Collaborative

As I rode my bike in to work today, I realized how lucky we are to have the great grounds crew that worked so hard to clear the paths to make our trip to work safe. I applaud the extra effort that was required during the last few days of snowy weather. While we were allowed to come in 2 hours late, I know they were all here bright and early clearing the paths so that we could get to work safely. I appreciate the work they do to make our campus beautiful year round, but I really applaud their extra effort at this time of the year.

Inviting and Collaborative

Ann really embodies all 5 of the characteristics of the Western Way, but if I have to pick 2, it's "Inviting" and "Collaborative." Ann is fundamentally committed to the greater good in all that she does. As a faculty member, I can't imagine this department without her as she is such a positive, wonderful help to all of us. But the true value and beauty of her kind, generous spirit is most evident in her interactions with students. She is always student-focused, which is the spirit of Western. Carrie Thurman

Program Manager, College of Humanities and Social Sciences

photo

Recognized for being:

Carrie Thurman exemplifies the Western Way by serving ALL departments and programs in CHSS. While not within her specific job responsibilities, she is assisting each program and department in their transitions to Drupal websites. Carrie is providing templates, helping transfer information, building new information, assisting with design, and teaching others to maintain the new websites. This is a significant undertaking for any single department/program. Yet, Carrie is assisting all CHSS departments and programs. She is generous with her time in responding to budget issues and questions. We call her the Banner Whisperer and the Drupal Whisperer because she can generate information no others seem to be able locate. She consistently asks if she can help with projects seems to want to take on more. She is happy to work for all of Western.

Chuck is always welcoming, gracious and helpful to students and the outside people we deal with on a regular basis. He has a natural cheerfulness and positive outlook that immediately improves the comfort level of the people with whom we interact. I can't think of anyone on this campus who is more willing to go the extra mile. Chuck helps to build valuable relationships which are sometimes difficult in an organization as siloed as a university. Stacey Maxwell

Purchasing / Support, Purchasing

photo

Recognized for being:
Inviting, Engaging, Distinctive, Collaborative and Adventuresome

Stacey was one of my first contacts in my new position; she did many things to make me feel welcome, both in spirit and in practical actions. She was never too busy to explain something, show me where something was, or assist me, even when she was doing three people's jobs at the same time. She is loyal to the unit and to Western. Stacey takes care of everybody's needs, including organizing our birthday celebrations! I was surprised when I first noticed how much Stacey knew about how things operate and the details of process and systems; she is truly a person with insightfulness and high comprehension--often observing but then thinking things through from all sides.

Tim always looks for efficiency for new implementations and improvement of old processes. He collaborates with others using a 'common sense' approach. Without his dedication to these processes and utilities, the job of account automation and management would be a much larger burden on the Technical Services department.

Cole's service to the university end-users has been the silver lining in the otherwise challenging transition to the new TEM system. While the transition has been fraught with questions and a pretty big learning curve, Cole always answers his phone with a cheery voice, a positive attitude and a willingness to help and answer any question, no matter how many times he has probably heard it. I'm sure I'm not alone in my experience or in my appreciation and I think Cole is the very definition of the "Western Way".
