Welcome to the home of the Western Flames Women's Rugby Team!
The Western Washington "Flames" women's rugby team is a university club sport that competes with teams throughout the Pacific Northwest. The Flames enjoy a strong tradition of athletic success combined with community and campus support.
The Western Washington Rugby team is a member of the Cascade Collegiate Women's Rugby Conference and competes annually with Washington State University, the University of Washington, Reed College, Western Oregon University, Central Washington University and Seattle University. We participate in Division II of USA Rugby college rugby. Although Western Washington University is traditionally known by its Viking mascot, our fore mothers abandoned the Viking as our team mascot, and adopted "The Flames" as our team name in honor of an amazing former sponsor.
In 1977 the founding members of the Western Flames brought the fabulous sport of rugby to women at WWU. Now, over thirty years later, the Flames are burning brighter than ever. In 2011 the Flames finished their season strong at third in the Nation and in 2012 the Western Washington women finished third in their regional playoff. With more than 35 registered members, half of which are entirely new to rugby, the team has major potential for expansion and success in the upcoming years.
