Western Washington University :
Funding will be available in 2008/2009 to support a Master of Science student in the Department of Biology or the Huxley Department of Environmental Science at Western Washington University on a Research Assistantship. The student working on the assistantship would be expected to work on grant-related research at the Shannon Point Marine Center while enrolled in a M.Sc. program. He or she would also be expected to pursue a thesis topic related to harmful ulvoid macroalgal blooms. Possible thesis topics include studies of algal-herbivore interactions involving bloom-forming macroalgae, chemical defenses of bloom-forming algae, allelopathic effects of toxins produced by bloom-forming algae on other organims, and effects of environmental conditions on the growth of macroalgal blooms. Funding may be available to hire an incoming student the summer before their graduate program begins. During their second year of graduate school, the student will most likely be funded through a teaching assistantship on the Bellingham campus. Prospective students interested in working on this project should contact Dr. Kathy Van Alstyne and should see the web sites for the department(s) they are interested in and the WWU Graduate School.
Summer Undergraduate Internships
Seattle Pacific University:
Full-time summer employment opportunites are available for two Seattle Pacific University students. The students working on this project will live in residence on Blakely Island during the summer. A summer stipend, room, and board will be provided. This work will form the basis of the students’ senior research project, thus the students will continue to work on the project at a reduced rate, and for course credit rather than salary, during the academic year. Students must be registered at Seattle Pacific University for autumn quarter following the summer of employment, or must register for research credits during the summer of employment. For more information, contact Dr. Tim Nelson.
Western Washington University:
Research Experiences for Undergraduates: The Shannon Point Marine Center (SPMC) sponsors a summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program in Anacortes, WA that is open to all US citizens. Students participating in the program have usually just completed their junior year of college. Participants are provided with a summer stipend, travel to and from Anacortes from their home institutions, and housing at the lab. For more information, please see the SPMC REU website or contact Dr. Kathy Van Alstyne.
