2020-21 Core Math Flowchart Sequences
(Accessible Text Version)

All students should seek advising related to their appropriate math placement based on major of interest and General University Requirements (GURs). The text below outlines a possible sequence for math coursework based on a student’s academic interest area. Students may enter the sequence at different points depending on prior math preparation. Students may register for the highest level of math they qualify for based on ALEKS Math Placement Assessment Scores or other transfer credit/placement information.

Math, Science and Engineering majors math sequence

Students pursuing a major in math/science are recommended to take math their first quarter at WWU. The sequence of math courses to follow is:

Quarter 1: Math 099 Introductory Algebra (5 credits) No degree credit

Quarter 2: Math 112 Functions and Algebraic Methods (5 credits)

Quarter 3: Math 114 Precalculus I (5 credits)

Quarter 4: Math 115 Precalculus II (5 credits and requires a previous WWU course) or Math 118 Accelerated Precalculus (5 credits)

Quarter 5: Math 124 Calculus and Analytic Geometry I (5 credits)

Quarter 6: Math 125 Calculus and Analytic Geometry II (5 credits)

Quarter 7: Math 224 Multivariable Calculus (5 credits)

Math 138 Accelerated Calculus (5 credits) is an option for students with a suitable
AP score and is a prerequisite to Math 224

College of Business & Economics majors math sequence

Students pursuing a major in the College of Business and Economics should start math early. The sequence of math courses to follow is:

Quarter 1: Math 099 Introductory Algebra (5 credits) No degree credit

Quarter 2: Math 112 Functions and Algebraic Methods (5 credits)

Quarter 3: Math 156 Algebra With Applications to Business and Economics (4 credits) or Math 114 Precalculus 1 (5 credits)

Quarter 4: Math 157 Calculus With Applications to Business and Economics (4 credits) or Math 115 Precalculus II, followed by Math 124 Calculus I (5 credits)

Note: Math 124/134/138 or AP Calculus 3-5 fulfills Math 157

Math sequence to fulfill Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning (QSR) portion of GURs

Students pursuing a major that does not include math or any other coursework that requires math placement will complete math for Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning GUR purposes. Students are strongly advised to meet with an advisor to determine their best course of action for fulfilling their QSR. Below is a sample sequence:

Quarter 1: Math 099 Introductory Algebra (5 credits) No degree credit

Quarter 2: Math 107 Math Reasoning and Its Applications (4 credits) or Math 108 Math Applications & Reasoning (4 credits) or Math 112 Functions and Algebraic Methods (5 credits)

Quarter 3 or future quarter: Take additional QSR course to complete QSR portion of GURs.

Elementary Education programs math sequence:

Quarter 1: Math 099 Introductory Algebra (5 credits) No degree credit

Quarter 2: Math 112 Functions and Algebraic Methods (5 credits)

Math 381 Teaching K-8 Mathematics I, Math 382 Teaching K-8 Mathematics II, and Math 383 Teaching K-8 Mathematics III will be taken within the Elementary Education program.

Honors math sequence:

Quarter 1: Math 134 Calculus I Honors (5 credits)

Quarter 2: Math 135 Calculus II Honors (5 credits) or Math 125 Calculus and Analytic II Geometry (5 credits)

Quarter 3: Math 224 Multivariable Calculus and Geometry I (5 credits)
