Responsible Conduct of Research

    Required for:
  • National Science Foundation (NSF) Grant recipients and any individual supported by the grant
  • The following National Institutes of Health (NIH) awards:
    • Training grants
    • Career development awards (individual or institutional)
    • Research education grant
    • Dissertation research grant

    For the following individuals on any of the above award types:
  • All trainees
  • All fellows
  • All participants
  • All scholars

    Timing of Completion:
  • The CITI training must be completed before applying for an NIH or NSF grant
  • The face-to-face training may be completed after the award is obtained

    Expiration:
  • Every 4 years



Financial Conflict of Interest

    Required for:
  • All Public Health Services (PHS) sponsor investigators

    Timing of Completion:
  • Before submission of a proposal for PHS funds

    Expiration:
  • Every 4 years
  • Following a finding of noncompliance
  • Following the revision of the University financial conflict of interest policy




Human Subjects Protection Training

    Required for:
  • Any individual who will be interacting or intervening with human subjects in a research context
  • Any individual who will have access to identifiable private information in a research context

    Training Components (one of the following):
  • Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program's "Social & Behavioral Researcher Basic/Refresher" Course
  • The National Institutes of Health Online Course is no longer available, but previously obtained certificates are valid until expiration (5 years after completion).

    Timing of Completion:
  • Before submission of a human subjects research application
  • In the case of open or on-going human subjects applications, before any interaction or intervention with human subjects or access to identifiable private information

    Expiration:
  • Every 5 years



Animal Subjects Protection Training

No formal training is required of animal researchers at this time, other than training specific to your lab. If your animal research is funded, please refer to the training requirements of your award.




Time and Effort Reporting

    Required for:
  • Any individual funded by a grant through Western Washington University
