ESCI 542: Remote Sensing:

Graduate Student Projects:  Each of you will be expected to come up with your own original research projects in consultation with me.  AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (no later than 4/9), you should meet with me to discuss your ideas and begin to define a workable project.   You should not put this off.  If you wait until the last couple of weeks of the quarter to start your project, you will not be able to do a credible job.  In order to encourage you to move your project along at a reasonable pace, I have established a few intermediate deadlines.  These deadlines are:

-          Topic Selection (Friday, April 9): No later than this date, you should meet with me to discuss your ideas for a project.  Check my office door and sign up for one of my office hours.  If none of my office hours work for you, we might be able to arrange another time.  Don’t expect to stop by my office at 4:45 on 4/9.  Come to this meeting with some general ideas about a project.  If possible, select a topic that relates to your thesis work.  Prior to our meeting, spend some time scanning the “Applications” section of our text for ideas and visit the library to scan the remote sensing journals for ideas.  I don’t expect you to have a fully developed project when you come in to see me but I do expect you to have some ideas. 

-          Project Outline (Friday, April 23): By this date, I expect you to have a fairly solid project outline developed.  You should be able to write a draft of the Introduction and Methods section for your project.  This should include citations to the primary literature so you will need to have completed your literature search by this time.  By 5:00pm on this date, you should email me a web address (or PDF) to these sections of your project report.  I will grade these sections and you will certainly make changes to these sections prior to turning in your final project report.

-          Draft Results (Friday, May 21: By this date, I expect you to have some preliminary results to present.  You should be able to write a draft of the Results and Discussion sections of your project report.  By 5:00pm on this date, you should email me a web address to these sections of your project report.  I will grade these sections and you will certainly make changes to these sections prior to turning in your final project report.

-          Final Project (Friday, June 4): By 5:00pm on this date, you should email your final project either in MS Word or PDF format. Your report should include all of the sections that you have used in your lab reports. However, unlike your class lab reports, I DO expect you to include an Introduction and complete Methods section. 

The general scope of these projects is something more than one of our weekly lab exercises but much much less than a thesis.  I do expect you to develop an original idea based on your discussions with me and your readings from the primary literature.  We have quite a bit of Landsat data available here at WWU and additional data are available on the net.  You will need to adjust to scope of your project based on the data we have available.
