Call to Order

Agenda Items:

   Reports/Announcements

Chair Derek Yip-Hoi announced 1) that the ATC blackboard (Bb) website is now running, and 2) that Mason Luvera is officially the ATC Student Representative.

Standing Business

      A: DC++ Usage

·         Yip-Hoi reported that there is some concern from the faculty regarding DC++ usage, a file sharing site that runs in residence halls, used to share exam questions and answers. Gary Bornzin suggested that faculty make past exams available for students so that professors know what material is circulating.

·         John Lawson acknowledged that even though DC++ may suggest a form of academic dishonesty, it is hard to discipline those using it. Once an exam has been passed back it is the students’ right to use freely. Lawson added that this is more of an academic management issue than a technical one. If instructors don’t change their exams and they hand them back the student is free to use them. students don’t sign a confidentiality agreement, and we don’t monitor web usage; this is not copyrighted material.

·         Rieko Darling suggested that the issue be sent back to the Faculty Senate so it can go over the Academic Honesty Policy and make it less vague. John Maclaughlin mentioned that if faculty let students get away with simply memorizing answers then “we aren’t being honest with ourselves.”

·         Yip-Hoi suggested that since this is a big issue, more information about the site is needed and discussion may continue in the future.

      B: Improving ATC effectiveness

·         Yip-Hoi presented the list of issues and suggested that members contemplate them over break. They will be prioritized at the next meeting.

      C: Changes to the ATC STF proposal review process – Discussion postponed.

New Business

      A: Changes to meeting schedule for the rest of the year

ATC members voted to postpone the scheduled January 4th meeting for the following week, January 11th .

      B: Preliminary 6-year planning

·         Lawson proposed that members bring him their thought on issues related to the University’s mission.

      C: Faculty member to help desk

·         Lawson announced that he needs a faculty member to be on the Help Desk search committee. Sarah Campbell volunteered.
