Committee members discussed recommended changes to the Diversity & Social Justice Grants and Fellowships Committee. A motion forwarded by Joy Wiggins and seconded to accept recommended changes passed unanimously.

Election of Chair |
A motion forwarded by Monique Kerman and seconded to elect Trula Nicholas as chair of the SJEC for the 2016/17 academic year passed unanimously.

SJEC Budget Allocation |
Aric Mayer presented an overview of the SJEC budget that provided projections through 2020 [see exhibit A]. It was agreed that Aric Mayer and Trula Nicholas will meet with the Provost Office’s budgeting staff and Lizzy Ramhorst [Shared Governance Operations Manager, Faculty Senate] to make some adjustments to line-item titles and clarify processes needed to smoothly disperse these funds as needed. Based on the numbers presented a motion was forwarded by Joy Wiggins and seconded to spend $6000.00 of the training funds to secure Cultures Connecting http://culturesconnecting.com/ as this year’s training of table facilitators for the upcoming campus-wide dialogue. The motion was passed unanimously.

Contribution to AS Social Issues Event |
The SJEC received a request from the AS Social Issues group to support their efforts to bring spoken word performer G Yamazawa to campus. A motion was forwarded by Monique Kerman and seconded to contribute $250.00 from the SJEC budget to this event.

Contribution to Western Reads Event |
The SJEC received a request from the Western Reads to co-sponsor “Rise Up: An Activists Conversation.” A motion was forwarded by Monique Kerman and seconded to contribute $250.00 from the SJEC budget to this event.

DSJ Sub-Committee Name Change |
On the recommendation of staff in the Provost’s Budget Office and the Shared Governance Staff the Committee members discussion a name change for the Diversity and Social Justice Grants Committee [a subcommittee of the SJEC]. Rational given for the recommended name change relates to the legal requirements implied when using the word ‘grants.’ A motion was forwarded by Aric Mayer and seconded to change the name to the Diversity and Social Justice Awards Committee.
