Using A Graphic or Layer to Control (Clip) a Map's Extent

A Data Frame can be visually 'clipped' based on a graphic (e.g. a box you have drawn) or based on an existing Layer.

To clip by a graphic:

  • Make sure you are working in the Data View (not the Layout view)

  • Add or select an existing graphic

  • Open the Data Frame tab of the layer's Data Frame Properties

  • Check the Enable box below Clip to Shape

  • Click the Specify Shape button

  • Check the Outline of Selected Graphic(s) box & click OK

  • Add a Border if desired (modified as desired)

  • Click OK

  • Note that the graphic does not need to be square

To clip by a Layer:

  • Make sure you are working in the Data View (not the Layout view)

  • Open the Data Frame tab of the layer's Data Frame Properties

  • Check the Enable box below Clip to Shape

  • Click the Specify Shape button

  • Check the Outline of Features box

  • Choose the Layer to use for the extent

  • Choose All (features in the layer) or Visible & click OK

  • Add a Border if desired (modified as desired)

  • Click OK
