How to add a Word Document or Excel Spreadsheet to ArcMap

Word Documents and Excel spreadsheets can be added as Objects to an ArcMap layout

As of ArcGIS 9.2 this does not work with Office 2007 files (only Office 97-2003)

You can create and add a new file, or add an existing file

  • From the Insert menu, choose Object
  • Choose Create New or Create from File
  • For a New file:
  •       Choose the type of file to create
  •     Click OK
  •     Edit and save your file
  • For an existing file (Create from File):
  •      Browse to the file to add
  •      Click OK
  •
  • Note that these file can be edited (as well as formatted) using Word (or Excel or whatever) - double click on the hatched box in ArcMap Layout to open the inserted file for editing
  • Size the 'object' in ArcMap to fit the file and/or size the file (margins, etc.) to fit the object

  • Note that you can set the Excel Print Area to control its final extent in the map:
