Language, Literacy, and Cultural Studies

The Language, Literacy, and Cultural Studies program responds to the growing diversity in Washington State’s schools and supports the Woodring College of Education’s efforts to embrace diversity and promote social justice. This major focuses on research-based and experience-validated knowledge to help elementary school teachers reach all students. This includes increasing teacher candidates’ cultural competency and capacity to teach English language learners. Graduates receive WWU’s recommendation for a Residency Teaching Certificate with endorsements in Elementary Education, Reading, and English Language Learners (ELL) or Bilingual Education (BE). For more information regarding the LLC major and its requirements, please visit our website: Language, Literacy and Cultural Studies, BAE

“The Elementary Education program and the LLC major in particular have prepared me well.  All of my experiences in the LLC program at Woodring blew the principal and the interview team away — they were baffled that a recent graduate would have so much experience.”

-Teal Larson, recent Western LLC graduate and sixth grade ELA Teacher at Karshner Elementary

Beyond the Classroom

Many students get involved with the Compass2Campus mentoring program, which is designed to increase opportunities toward higher education by providing mentoring for 5th-12th grade students from traditionally underrepresented and diverse backgrounds in Whatcom and Skagit counties.
