What is Management Information Systems (MIS)?

Students in MIS program develop expertise in both business operations and cutting-edge technologies to create solutions that drive organizational success. Career opportunities for MIS graduates are diverse and in high demand. Below are examples of roles and their responsibilities:

  • System Analyst: Analyze requirements and design information systems to align technology with business objectives.
  • Business Analyst: Assess processes and recommend technology-driven improvements to enhance efficiency.
  • Software Developer and Tester: Design, develop, test, and maintain user-friendly, scalable websites/applications to support business objectives and ensure quality and reliability.
  • Data Analyst: Analyze data to generate insights that inform strategic decisions.
  • Data Engineer: Design and build systems for collecting, storing, and transforming data to ensure it is reliable, accessible, and ready for analysis.
  • Network & Infrastructure Administrator: Manage and secure network and IT infrastructure to ensure reliable connectivity.
  • IT Support Specialist: Provide technical assistance to maintain seamless business operations.
  • IT Consultant: Advise organizations on technology solutions to achieve competitive advantages.

Based on the most recent employment information provided by WWU’s Office of Institutional Effectiveness (for WWU’s 2023 graduates), the job placement rate for MIS students was 92% and the median starting salary of $55,000 was in the top-10 for all degrees offered at WWU.  Employment for many MIS fields is expected to continue to be strong.  For example, the job role of computer systems analysts is projected to grow much faster than average during the next few years according to the U.S. Department of Labor Career Outlook.
