Message from the Provost
When I assumed my current position, President Shepard and I had already discussed the importance of making a careful examination of the administrative structure and staffing in the Provost Office. I immediately initiated that examination, the goal being to determine ways we could improve our ability to serve the division and the institution. A further consideration was our ability to work across Western's divisions as an effective part of the university team.
I reached one conclusion very quickly: The Provost Office has been and is a very hardworking unit with talented and committed staff. So, my priority has been to find ways to adjust responsibilities among these staff in ways that might allow us to most effectively focus their expertise in order to respond to the needs of the campus community.
I am pleased to report the following changes. Dr. Brian Burton will accept an appointment to the position of Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Dr. Deb Jusak will be appointed Special Assistant to the Provost. Both positions will begin on September 30, 2013. I am also eliminating the current position of Vice Provost for Academic Resources.
Among other duties, Dr. Burton will head up the Academic Budget Office, will oversee a number of direct reports and interdisciplinary programs, and will coordinate strategic planning with the Provost. Dr. Jusak's position has responsibilities in space/capital planning and administration, policy development and implementation, data management, and special projects. I will continue to have primary responsibility for faculty relations, including those involving our Faculty Senate and UFWW partners.
I look forward to working with Drs. Burton and Jusak in their new roles and appreciate their willingness to take on this important work. I will immediately begin consulting with our colleagues in CBE regarding interim and permanent leadership of their college.
Brent Carbajal, Ph.D.
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
